Top-seeded Novak Djokovic from Serbia rallied from two sets down and saved two match points to beat five-time U.S. Open champion, Roger Federer of Switzerland, 6-7 (7-9), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5, to reach the 2011 U.S. Open Finals. Djokovic, the world’s number one player, who is enjoying one of the best years in tennis history, also saved two match points en route to a semifinal win over Federer at Flushing Meadows last year, so it was a bit of unwelcome deja-vu for Federer. Federer appeared to have victory in his grasp after breaking Djokovic for a 5-3 lead in the fifth set, but Djokovic fought back. Two games later, Djokovic captured the three hour, 51 minute battle when Federer sent a service return long.

"If you’re playing somebody like Roger, you have to take your chances when they’re presented; otherwise you’re losing a match," said Djokovic. "I don’t want to say I was in control of the fifth set, because that’s not true. He was serving for the match and I could have easily lost. But this is what happens at this stage of a tournament when two top players meet each other."

The defeat in the final Grand Slam of the year means Federer’s streak of consecutive seasons with at least one major title ends at eight.

"I felt like I played okay today … maybe I played better at Wimbledon, but then again, it’s a different surface, it’s different opponents," said Federer. "Today, I clearly felt like I never should have lost, where in Wimbledon, it was more out of my control, you know but it’s, you know, a bit of reaction tennis on grass. I was never up a break in the third, fourth, or fifth at Wimbledon, which today I was. I was one serve away, really. But I get over these losses quickly."

Djokovic will now face the second-seeded Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, in the finals on Monday, Sept. 12 at 4:00 p.m. Nadal advanced today after defeating the number four seed, Great Britain’s Andy Murray, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the semifinals to set up a repeat of last year’s final. Nadal was in control the majority of the match, but Murray was game throughout. When Nadal broke Murray in the fourth set to take a 3-1 lead, it was the beginning of the end for Murray. Nadal has lost just one set in six matches so far at the 2011 U.S. Open.

Nadal beat Djokovic in last year’s final, but the Serb, has beaten him in five finals this year, including Wimbledon, to unseat Nadal atop the ATP Men’s Singles Rankings.

"It’s obvious that this is the best year of my career, by far," said Djokovic. "My confidence level is very high at this moment and that helps me to get into big matches and go for the shots that I wasn’t going for in the past couple of years."
