Washington Kastles Tie Longest Streak in History of Pro Sports With 33rd Consecutive Win

On Monday at the Wharf in Washington, D.C., the Washington Kastles won their World TeamTennis (WTT) season opener against the New York Sportimes, 23-15, marking their 33rd consecutive victory. The win tied the Kastles with the Los Angeles Lakers for the longest winning streak in the history of professional sports. They will attempt break the record set by the Lakers in the 1971-72 season by beating the Boston Lobsters on Tuesday. Michelle Obama, Washington Redskins Hall of Fame running back John Riggins, and Billie Jean King, founder of World TeamTennis, all watched the match. Venus Williams, who was forced to withdraw from competition this season due to a back injury, was seen on the sidelines cheering on the Kastles. Kevin Anderson made his debut for the Kastles and Martina Hingis proved why she will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The Sportimes fought throughout match opened with Anderson’s 5-2 win over New York’s Jesse Witten in men’s singles. Leander Paes then secured a 5-4 set win. Hingis defeated Anna-Lena Groenefeld 5-1 in the women’s singles. Jeanie Buss, Lakers executive vice president, recognized the Kastles’ success late Monday night on Twitter, saying: "Congrats to Washington #Kastles of #WorldTeamTennis for tying Lakers 33 game win streak tonite. Going for record 34 tmrw vs. Boston Lobsters."

In the other action, Hingis & Paes of the Kastles defeated Robert Kendrick & Kveta Peschke of the Sportimes 5-3 in mixed-doubles. The Sportimes got a win in women’s doubles as Groenefeld & Peschke defeated Hingis & Anastasia Rodionova 5-3, and men’s doubles went to the Kastles as Paes & Bobby Reynolds beat Witten & Kendrick 5-3.

The Sportimes are now 0-2, but have a strong team and will look to right the ship in their next match.
