Hundreds of aspiring pros were on hand in Central Park Sunday to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of free tennis instruction, prizes and the opportunity to play with the pros as part of the ongoing CityParks Tennis grassroots program. Hosted by 1993 French Open doubles champion and Tennis Channel on-air personality Murphy Jensen, the animated Jensen was joined by 21-year-old American hopeful and current professional tour player Denis Kudla, recently ranked as high as 90th in the world.

CityParks Tennis, presented by Chase, provides free tennis lessons and equipment to thousands of kids ages six to 16 each year in more than 36 parks throughout the five boroughs of NYC. The program promotes physical fitness, while building self confidence, and is designed to make the sport of tennis freely available to those who want to learn the game in a fun, relaxed environment.

As the Official Apparel Sponsor of CityParks Tennis, Sunday’s free clinic witnessed LACOSTE ambassador Jensen and LACOSTE professional tennis player Kudla demonstrating fundamentals while emphasizing the importance of having fun on the court and giving back on the community level. With clear blue skies overhead, kids of all abilities benefited from the pro instruction and also had the opportunity to hit for prizes that included a range of LACOSTE merchandise and Grand Prize consisting of 2013 US Open tickets.

While the event was open to the public, the clinic also included participation from several players from The Junior Tennis Academy presented by LACOSTE. Established in 1986, the Academy is a free, annual tournament-training program for talented NYC juniors ages 8-16 selected at open tryouts held each May at the USTA BJK National Tennis Center. Providing free year-round coaching, practice time and tournament sponsorship, the Academy helps to defray the high cost of advanced tennis training so all dedicated juniors in NYC have an equal opportunity to realize their potential.

“We are honored to be working with a brand, such as LACOSTE, which is as committed as we are to this next generation of tennis players,” said City Parks Foundation President, Alison Tocci. “Not only will we be able to expand the quality and reach of our program, but we’ll be able to offer once in a lifetime opportunities to our participants through LACOSTE pro-clinics and scholarships.”

“We are thrilled to announce our partnership with the City Parks Foundation,” said Sophie Lacoste, LACOSTE Foundation President, “they have done an incredible job generating awareness and goodwill within the community. In addition, through their free instructional programs City Parks Foundation is making the sport of tennis available to thousands of kids throughout New York City.”
