American Donald Young advanced to the quarterfinals of the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship on Thursday in Houston, upsetting out the 2012 champion and number six seed Juan Monaco, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Young will meet the number four seed, Fernando Verdasco, a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 winner Thursday over American Steve Johnson.

Young is joined in the quarterfinals by fellow American, 21-year-old American Jack Sock after his 6-4, 6-3 win over Benjamin Becker. Up next for Sock is the number three seed and 2013 Houston runner-up, Nicolas Almagro, after his 6-2, 6-3 victory over American veteran and Houston resident Michael Russell.

Colombians were responsible for two upsets Thursday, as Santiago Giraldo defeated the second-seeded Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-4, while Alejandro Gonzalez was leading 6-3, 2-0 when the fifth-seeded Feliciano Lopez was forced to retire due to illness.

“I had a lot of chances in a lot of games, and every time it was love/30, 15/30, I was hitting three in a row straight to the fence,” said Robredo. “With this, there’s no chance to win. Just need to keep working to see if I can have a great feeling for the next tournament.”
