The BB&T Atlanta Open begins tonight as the opening event of the 2014 Emirates Airline US Open Series kicks off from Atlanta, GA. The series is a five-week showcase of the world’s best tennis players on the hard courts of North America leading up to the US Open in Flushing Meadows, NY at the end of August.

Headlining the BB&T Open is top-seeded and defending champion American John Isner. The 12th ranked player in the world beat South African Kevin Anderson in last year’s final, and will participate in all of the back-to-back events over the next five weeks.

“It’s been a stretch of the season where in the past I’ve done extremely well, and it’s sort of helped my season out quite a bit,” said Isner. “The main goal is you want to play a lot of matches, you want to win a lot of matches.”

As the top-seed, Isner will receive a bye into the second round and awaits the winner of American Robby Ginepri and Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky. The top four seeds earn byes into the second round as the next three seeds after Isner are second-seeded Anderson, third-seeded Gael Monfils and fourth-seed Vasek Pospisil.

Monday marks the opening night of the series and will feature the Opening Ceremonies and Military Appreciation Night. Following the festivities, Americans Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson will face off in the opening round matchup, the first time the two will play against each other. Querrey and Johnson, who are partners in the doubles draw, are two potential favorites for the Atlanta Open.

Isner believes that there are a number of Americans in the draw that have a chance to run the table and win the opening event.

“I think Sam Querrey can. I think a guy like Jack Sock can, maybe a player like Steve Johnson can,” said Isner when asked about his countryman’s chances. “It’s an advantage for us playing at home. We’re going to have the crowd on our side and most American players generally play better on hard courts since this is the surface we’ve played the most on growing up. I expect a handful of or a lot of American players to play well this summer and carry that momentum into the US Open.”

The second match of the night will feature Atlanta resident Donald Young who is making his fifth-straight appearance at the Atlanta tournament. Young will face off with Dudi Sela, whom he beat in the first round of this event back in 2010. While there are just two singles matches tonight, the draw includes a number of doubles matches on the evening.

After the BB&T Atlanta Open, the Emirates US Open Series will make stops in California, Washington D.C., Toronto, Montreal, Cincinnati, Connecticut and North Carolina before concluding with the US Open in New York.
