Forbes magazine recently released its list of the most financially valuable athletes in the world and Swiss tennis player Roger Federer topped the list along with golfer Tiger Woods. Based on numbers from 2013, Federer and Woods each earned $46 million based on their names and brands.

The list is not comprised based on yearly salary, but on how marketable and valuable their respective brand is. In 2013, Federer did not win a Grand Slam nor did he reach the finals of any major tournament, but still topped Forbes’ list.

The 32-year old has a deal with Nike that is worth $100 million, according to Forbes. He has a line of shirts, rackets and caps which all helped spread his brand globally. The real marketability with Federer becomes obvious when you consider that tournament organizers need to shell out about $1 million just to get a starting guarantee from him.

“Consistency for so many years has benefitted Federer’s brand value greatly,” said Hans-Willy Brockes, the head of Europäische Sponsoring Börse told Credit Suisse. “A brand’s value generally comes from its recognition and the ability to generate sales and earnings based on this recognition.”

Two women’s tennis players helped round out Forbes’ list as Russia’s Maria Sharapova and Li Na found their way into the top 10. Sharapova was fourth on the list with an estimated $23 million and Li’s earnings were estimated at $15 million, just ahead of soccer players Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
