The first-round of the men’s draw at the Citi Open came to a close on Tuesday as four more Americans punched their tickets into the second and third rounds in Washington, D.C.

Sam Querrey led the charge as he ripped 17 aces against fellow American Michael Russell in a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Querrey was upset in the second-round at the Atlanta Open last week, but revved up his powerful serve on Tuesday to dispose of Russell.

“I stuck to my game plan the whole time,” said Querrey. “I was aggressive on every forehand and aggressive on both second-serve returns and that’s what I wanted to do.”

Querrey now draws a matchup with fourth-seeded Kei Nishikori whom he has beaten in their previous three meetings. Nishikori earned a bye into the second-round.

Steve Johnson knocked off Australian wild card James Duckworth 6-3, 7-6(4) to move on Tuesday. Johnson, who lost to Querrey in the Atlanta Open first-round, will now take on fellow American and fifth-seeded John Isner.

The second-highest ranked American Jack Sock rolled past his first-round opponent as well, beating German Michael Berrer 7-6(2), 6-4 to move on. Sock, who sits behind Isner in the American rankings, next faces second-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic. Sock has played excellent tennis as of late and could bolster his brand by defeating the seventh-ranked player in the world.

Some of the second-round matches also got underway on Tuesday. Tim Smyczek rounded out the American victories on Tuesday as the unseeded 26-year old knocked off 12th-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4. Smyczek now advances to the third-round of a tournament for the first time this year, and will meet the winner of Richard Gasquet and Dudi Sela.

Radek Stepanek, the 11th seed, and Yen-Hsun Lu, the 16th seed, were the only other two seeded players to fall on Tuesday in Washington. Lleyton Hewitt, Denis Istomin and Kevin Anderson all rolled into the third-round.
