Roger Federer won the 80th title of his career on Sunday, defeating Spaniard David Ferrer 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 to capture the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.

“I’m very happy about the week,” said Federer. “Just overall it went from good to great. Just really pleased that I was able to back up a tough week last week already.”

After Federer broke serve for a 5-3 lead, he saved four break points of his own to capture the opening set.  Ferrer returned the favor in the second set by saving four break points of his own in the opening game. He then had control of the remainder of the set and after racing to a 5-0 lead, the sixth-seeded Ferrer took the second set 6-1 to force a deciding third-set.

The Swiss than notched a key break point in the fourth game of the final set to go up 3-1. From there, he was able to eventually serve out the match and win his fifth Western and Southern Open.

“I really thought I was feeling better again towards the end of the second set, like he felt better at the end of the first,” said Federer. “I carried that over into the third and served great and was able to come up with some really good plays. Just overall, I think I played a great match at the end.”

Federer is now 16-0 all-time versus Ferrer who has won just five sets against the Swiss in those 16 matches. Despite the loss, the Spaniard said he was pleased with his play but came up just short.

“He was better, but I was close,” said Ferrer. “I am happy with my game these two weeks. I [reached the] quarterfinal in Toronto and [the] final here, playing well every day.”

Both players will make their next appearance at the U.S Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
