As the U.S. Open launches into full gear, Victoria Azarenka, two-time Australian Open winner and former world number one, is prepping for more than just two weeks of intensive on-court competition. Off the court, she is making preparations for the release of a limited edition timepiece that she has designed in partnership with Citizen Watch Company, a brand for which she has been an ambassador since 2012.

On behalf of the watch’s fall release, Azarenka and Citizen recently held a fashion design competition amongst the students of New York’s High School of Fashion Industries. Working side by side with Azarenka, competitors were asked to create outfits that complement the new white silicone, rose gold-accented timepiece.

“When the watch was finished, the question that remained was how to present it to the public,” said Azarenka. “Then, Citizen came up with the idea of this collaborative competition. They catered to my desire to work with young adults and children because that is what inspires me. They also sought to highlight my love of fashion.”

The process of outfit development was comprised of three meetings, which allowed ideas and sketches to progress into true works of art.

“The first [meeting] just touched on ideas, you know, my likes and dislikes, my personal taste, my fashion inspirations,” said Azarenka. “The second gave students a chance to present samples, while I had the opportunity to give feedback. Today, I saw the final products for the first time.” “Vika got very involved in the process, she was like, I really think that should be symmetrical,” said a rep from Citizen. “I don’t like the edge on this. That needs more color.”

Though the official prize of the competition was impressive, consisting of a generous scholarship and a brand new Citizen watch, both Azarenka and the students agreed that the most valuable and rewarding aspect was the experience itself.

“This was an educational process for me and the students,” said Azarenka. “For the students, it served as a unique opportunity to gain exposure, as well as take another step out into the world doing that which they would like to pursue. For me, it was a chance to be a part of that, to learn something new, to give back and to help the students take a step forward in achieving a dream. I can also wear all of the outfits!”

In fact, Azarenka was so fond of the final products that we may even get the chance to see her sporting them during the U.S. Open or at events in the near future. When asked if she plans on wearing them, she gave us a smile and quickly responded, “I hope that I get to wear all of the outfits because I just loved each and every one of them so much!”
