It was a big day for local tennis in New York as two Long Islanders both took the court at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in the Men’s Doubles Draw at the U.S. Open.

On Court 4, 18-year-old Noah Rubin from Rockville Centre, N.Y.’s, along with his partner, 16-year-old Stefan Kozlov from Florida, who received a wild card after winning the USTA Boys National Championships, took on 17-year-old Jared Donaldson and his partner, and only non-teenager in the match, fellow American and 36-year-old Michael Russell. Rubin & Kozlov started strong, winning the first set on the strength of great serving and two breaks of serve. The duo moved well at the net and seemed in control. The second set was a back and forth battle, with no breaks of serve and went to a tie-breaker where Donaldson & Russell were able to prevail 7-5 in the breaker.

With the winning team earning a trip to the second round and a shot at the world’s number one doubles team, Bob & Mike Bryan, the third set was tight and pressure-filled. The match was even until Kozlov was broken at 3-3. Donaldson & Russell never looked back up 5-4 and Donaldson served out the match for the win.

“It was a huge venue, and incredibly important tournament, with a ton of press coverage and tremendous self-expectations on Noah's part,” said Eric Rubin, Noah’s father and coach, “He handled it all with such courage, conviction, heart, grit, and most importantly, with incredible class. I couldn't be more proud of him in every facet as a tennis player, and more importantly, as a person. What an awesome experience to build off of.”

On Court 10, Bellmore JFK alumni and Merrick, N.Y. native Scott Lipsky was busy teaming up Rajeev Ram as they took on the 15th-seeded team of Jamie Murray of Great Britain & John Peers of Australia. The team of Lipsky & Ram dropped the first set 4-6, but didn't go away. In the second set, they survived a tough tie-breaker to stay in the match, and in the third set, the back and forth battle went to yet another tie-break. In the third set breaker, Lipsky & Ram were once again able to win the big point and survive in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.

Lipsky & Ram now move on to the second round for a meeting with two top junior players, 16-year-olds Michael Mmoh & Francis Tiafoe.
