Serena and Venus Williams were ousted from the US Open doubles quarterfinals in straight sets on Tuesday, falling to the Russian pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina  7-6(5), 6-4 at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Serena, who is still alive in the singles draw, struggled with her serve all match long. She was broken early on in each set, and double-faulted on the last two points of the match which gave the fourth-seeded Russians the victory. She called for a medical timeout early in the second set because of a right foot injury, but seemed fine after receiving some treatment.

After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, the Williams’ evened the second set at 4-4 after a Venus hold. The Russians answered back by winning eight of the last 10 points, earning a break on the Serena double fault, to advance into the US Open semifinals for the first time.

The loss moves to the Williams’ sisters to 4-3 playing doubles this year. The pair lost to Makarova and Vesnina in Dubai in February as well, and has not won a doubles crown since Wimbledon in 2012.

Overall, the Williams’ committed 30 unforced errors while their Russian opponents had just 14. The Russian’s capitalized on half of their break point opportunities and took advantage of poor serving from the younger Williams sister.

The pair of Makarova and Vesnina await the winner of Andrea Hlavackova/Jie Zheng and Kimiko Date-Krumm/Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova who will play tomorrow on Armstrong.

Makarova is still playing in the singles draw as well after she knocked off seventh-seeded Eugenie Bouchard on Monday. If Makarova can defeat two-time finalist Victoria Azarenka and Serena can beat 13th seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta, the two will meet once again at Flushing Meadows, only this time in a singles matchup with a spot in the title match on the line.
