In just under two hours, the 14th-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori late Monday afternoon, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to capture the 2104 U.S Open Men’s Singles Title. Both Nishikori and Cilic are were playing in their first Grand Slam final after two major upsets Saturday afternoon as Nishikori defeated the top-seeded Novak Djokovic, and Cilic defeated the second-seeded Roger Federer, denying Federer an opportunity for his sixth U.S. Open title.

“My team has brought something special to me,” said Cilic during his on-court interview. “I enjoyed some of my best times here, and played the best tennis of my life. If you work hard, things will pay off.”

After winning the final point, Cilic headed up through the Arthur Ashe crowd to a box where he was hugged by members of his family and coach Goran Ivanisevic.

“It was a tough loss, but I was glad to be in the finals,” said Nishikori. “I am sorry I did not get the trophy but I will for sure next time.”

Coming into the match, the 24-year-old Nishikori led the 25-year-old Cilic 5-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, including the last three consecutive wins.
