Another round at the Wuhan Open has brought yet another upset. The top seeds at the inaugural tournament from Wuhan, China continued to fall on Wednesday, this time it was the fourth-seeded Maria Sharapova bowing out in the third-round, as Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky put an end to the Russian’s run with a 7-6(3), 7-5 victory to notch her third career win over a top 10 opponent.

The match was evenly played, as both demonstrated excellent baseline skill, ripping a number of ground strokes to fight off serves. While Sharapova ripped 12 more winners than Bacsinszky, she also committed 21 more unforced errors which eventually did her in.

“She had a really good serving day,” said a complimentary Sharapova. “I don’t think I did much on my returns, something that’s a strength of mine, and I just didn’t feel like I used that to my advantage.”

Bacsinsky had two previous wins over top 10 opponents but those came via retirement, making this victory the biggest of her career. It also puts her into the quarterfinals where she will take on eight-seeded Caroline Wozniacki.

The Dane cruised into the quarters on Wednesday, rolling past Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-0, 6-3. She needed just over an hour to get past the 27th-ranked player in the world, converting six of seven break point opportunities on her way to the straight-set victory.

The tournament’s lone top five seed, Petra Kvitova, pushed her way into the quarterfinals with a three-set win over her compatriot Karolina Pliskova, who had won 11 of her previous 12 matches coming in. Kvitova was able to outlast her in a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win and moves into a quarterfinal match with France’s Caroline Garcia. Garcia used 11 aces to cruise past American Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-2 in their third-round match.

After moving on thanks to a Serena Williams retirement, Alize Cornet followed it up with a 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-3 victory over Belgian wild card Kirsten Flipkens. She fought off a 3-1 deficit in the third set to earn a spot in the final eight where she will play sixth-seeded Eugenie Bouchard. The Canadian disposed of American Alison Riske, 6-2, 6-3.

The final quarterfinal match will feature seventh-seeded Angelique Kerber versus Elina Svitolina. Kerber rolled past Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova 6-1, 6-1, while Svitolina received a walkover after Garbine Muguruza was forced to withdraw with gastroenteritis.
