Li Na Named Official Ambassador of WTA Finals

Li Na has been named an Official Ambassador of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore presented by SC Global, the WTA announced. The recently retired two-time Grand Slam champion is the highest ranked player ever from Asia, and has quickly become a legend in her home country of China.

“We are excited to announce Li Na’s role as an Official Ambassador for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, the first time in the event’s 44-year history is will be staged in Asia-Pacific,” said WTA Chairman and CEO Stacey Allaster. “This will be a great opportunity for the fans from around the world over to get close to a tennis legend who has inspired a nation and done so much for the game in Asia-Pacific. She has inspired a generation of young girls throughout Asia-Pacific with hopes that, they too, can achieve the dream of playing in the WTA Finals.”

Li joins Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Marion Bartoli, Iva Majoli and Mary Pierce as ambassadors of the event.

She was honored with an on-court ceremony prior to the China Open matches on Tuesday night, and has received a ton of positive notoriety since announcing her retirement earlier this month. She was integral in bringing a tennis tournament to Wuhan, her hometown, which was won by Petra Kvitova last week.

In addition to her two Grand Slams, the 32-year old reached 21 WTA tournament finals and won over a lot of fans across the world with her tenacious play on the court. Her time as WTA Finals Ambassador will begin on October 17th, when she travels to Singapore to take part in the Fan Festival Weekend which kicks off the WTA Finals.
