You would never have gone cruisin’ in your 1972 Ford Mustang without wearing a pair of statement sunglasses and having the stereo tuned to Isaac Hayes, Al Green, Steely Dan or Stevie Wonder. This summer, sunglass styles from the peace-and-love era will make a comeback in all their retro glory. However, Maui Jim has updated the throw-back eyewear with today’s most advanced technologies for a stylin’ look.

All three of the newest retro sunglasses feature Maui Jim’s proprietary MauiPure lenses which are the world’s clearest non-glass lenses that are ultra-lightweight, scratch- and impact-resistant. The hybrid, injection-molded, de-centered lenses are the lightest lens material in the Maui Jim portfolio and are optically clear.

All Maui Jim lenses are packed with up to nine layers of patented PolarizedPlus2 lens technology that has received the Seal of Recommendation from The Skin Cancer Foundation because the technology cuts 99.9 percent of glare and eliminates 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Maui Jim’s sunglasses are recognized as safe and effective sun protection and are an important part of an effective defense program against skin cancers of the eye and eyelids.

A distinguishing feature of all Maui Jim lenses is the rich and vibrant color that you see. This is the result of using three rare earth elements and other treatments to white-balance Maui Jim’s lenses, so the colors you see are pure and true. MauiPure lenses also are protected with waterproof and oleophobic coatings to shed water and snow and to repel grease and smudges.

‘70s motorcycle-inspired eyewear doesn’t get any better than Breakers. This double-bridged, high-grade nylon aviator screams retro with its chunky styling and relaxed demeanor. The lightweight frame is injection-molded into a comfortable 8-base curve with spring hinges on the temples to hug the face. The saddle-style nose bridge has embedded rubber pads for added stability. In addition to the PolarizedPlus2 lens technology, this style also features Maui Jim’s bi-gradient mirrors that offer added sun protection at the top and bottom of each lens—basically, the lenses “squint” for you. This frame fits midsize to large face shapes with an eye size of 64 mm, bridge size of 17 mm, and temple length of 122 mm. The style comes in Matte Black with Neutral Grey lenses for bright sunny days; Matte Tortoise with HCL® Bronze lenses for variable light conditions; and Translucent Dark Grey with Maui HT lenses for a true throw-back look in any light condition.

Legends’ vintage styling dresses up any outfit. These lightweight acetate sunglasses have a right-from-the-movies look with their squared-off shape and distinctive temples. The anti-corrosive spring hinges help these sunglasses stay snug and secure. The saddle-style fixed nose bridge works with wider noses. Legends’ MauiPure lenses also have Maui Jim’s patented bi-gradient mirrors. Designed for a range of smaller to midsize face shapes, Legends has an eye size of 54 mm, bridge size of 23 mm, and temple length of 135 mm with a 6-base curvature.

The classic ‘70s teardrop shape of an oversized metal aviator is updated in Honomanu. The ultra-light pure titanium frame is dressed up with an acetate overlay in Black with Gloss Black and Neutral Grey lenses or Antique Gold with Tortoise and HCL Bronze lenses. The nose bridge is adjustable for maximum comfort. The lenses feature MauiGradient tinting that is darker at the top of the lens and gradually gets lighter towards the bottom of the lens. Honomanu is perfect for a wide range of faces sizes and has an eye size of 61 mm, bridge size of 14 mm, and temple length of 137 mm with a 6-base curvature.

All of these sunglasses are covered by the company’s standard warranty. MauiPure lenses are not available in prescription; however, consumers who wish to have Maui Jim's authentic prescription lenses in these styles may do so with one of Maui Jim's other outstanding lens materials: Maui Evolution or polycarbonate.
