Roger Federer moved closer to a berth in the ATP World Tour Finals on Tuesday, rolling past Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-2 in the second round-robin match of the tournament.

A six-time defending champion at the year-end finals, Federer has now won four straight sets in his two London matches, putting him in the Group B driver’s seat.

Federer came out firing in the first set, ripping 11 winners which included four aces. He was much more efficient than Nishikori who had to have his right wrist strapped while down 1-4. Nishikori also needed medical attention to that wrist in his opening match against Andy Murray.

Federer would go on to win the opener 6-3 in 35 minutes, and quickly carried that momentum over into the second set.

Each player would exchange holds through the first two games of the second set, but Federer broke first in the third game to jump ahead 2-1. The two would exchange holds over the next two games before Federer notched another break to go up 4-2.

After a Nishikori double-fault, Federer would hold serve to complete the straight set win in one hour and 10 minutes.

“I was expecting a very difficult match,” said Federer. “I’ve known him since he was 17 years old and always thought he was a great talent and he’s going to have a great future.”

While Federer dropped just five games all match long, he still has some room to improve. He squandered a few break point chances in the second set and allowed the 24-year old U.S. Open runner up to save some break points.

He also got down in some games on his own serve before battling back and taking advantage of the ailing Nishikori. The win is the 70th of the season for Federer, and all but assures him a spot in the semifinals.
