Stan Wawrinka bounced back from a heartbreaking loss in the ATP World Tour semifinals to compatriot Roger Federer last week by trouncing France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Friday to put Switzerland up 1-0 in the Davis Cup Final.

The fourth-ranked Wawrinka blew four match points in the last match he played, the ATP Finals semis, but made sure he did not allow Tsonga back into this match. After a dip in form in the second-set, Wawrinka put Tsonga away with his serve in the third and fourth sets to give the Swiss the advantage.

After splitting the first two sets, both players exchanged holds through the first give games of the set before Wawrinka notched the first break of the frame. He broke up 3-2 after  a Tsonga forehand sailed wide, and would go on to serve out the 42-minute set.

The Swiss lost just seven service points throughout the frame.

The fourth set was much of the same as he broke in the opening game followed by a hold to jump ahead 2-0. The deficit was too much for Tsonga to make up as Wawrinka’s aggressiveness, he picked up 25 points at the net, and efficient serving were not to be denied.

Wawrinka ripped 61 winners, compared to just 39 for Tsonga in the two hour and 24 minute match.

Switzerland is seeking its first ever Davis Cup title and now leads the nine-time champion French 1-0.
