In what comes as no surprise to many, American Serena Williams won the WTA Player of the Year Award, the WTA announced on Friday. “I’m really grateful and humbled to receive this award. It’s been an amazing year,” said Serena. “I’m truly blessed to be playing at this level this far into my career. I feel incredibly supported by my team, my family, the tennis community and the fans. I’m just so happy—thank you!”

Serena struggled, based on her standards, through much of the first half of the season. She failed to make it out of the fourth round in the first three majors, including withdrawing from Wimbledon doubles because of a viral illness after being unable to even get a serve over the net.

She turned things around when the WTA Tour moved to the hard court part of the season, winning 26 of 29 matches after getting back on hard courts, including a dominating U.S. Open performance that culminated with her knocking off Caroline Wozniacki in the finals.

In addition to her U.S. Open title, she also won tournaments in Stanford and Cincinnati during the fall. At the WTA Finals in Singapore, she shook off a straight-set loss to Simona Halep in the round-robin stage and went on to win the tournament for the third straight season.

Overall, the 33-year-old won seven titles in 2014. She went a remarkable 12-1 against top 10 players, with the only loss coming against Halep in the WTA Finals opener.

It is the sixth time that Serena has taken home WTA Player of the Year honors, trailing only Steffi Graff and Martina Navratilova for most all-time.
