Rarely do you see two former world number ones play each other so early in a Grand Slam tournament, but Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka each took care of their first-round tests at the Australian Open to set up a fantastic second-round matchup between the two.

Wozniacki took on young American Taylor Townsend in her opener. The Dane edged Townsend in a first-set tie-breaker and then displayed some excellent tennis as she rolled 6-1 in the second set.

The key part of the match came as Townsend led 1-0 on serve. She had a chance to break and take a 2-0 lead, but Wozniacki saved a break point and went on to hold to even the set at 1-1. From there, Wozniacki was able to hold the rest of the way to close out the 91-minute contest.

As is her style, Wozniacki was extremely efficient from the baseline and committed just 10 unforced errors. Her win puts her into a second-round bout with Azarenka, whose recent struggles puts had her unseeded in Melbourne.

In an intriguing first-round matchup, Azarenka took care of American Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-2 to add to Stephens’ recent struggles. Despite hitting no aces throughout the match, Azarenka won points on 81 percent of her first serves and broke Stephens five times in the two sets to run away with the convincing win.

In contrast, Stephens struggled with her serve. Azarenka won nearly half of all of the points on the American’s serve in this one-sided contest.

Wozniacki leads the head-to-head series between the two former number ones 4-3.

“To be honest, I don’t look at this match like it’s an early stage—it’s just going to be another tough match for me,” said Azarenka. “Being unseeded, it’s not a surprise that I have a tough draw or tough opponents in the early rounds. I just need to go through that. I will just accept the challenges.

She showed some great tennis at the end of last year, and I know she’s very dangerous. We always have tough matches. I just need to focus on myself, prepare the best I can and just compete.”
