Andy Murray essentially played a road match on Tuesday, battling through Nick Kyrgios and the Australian crowd for a 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 quarterfinal victory Tuesday.

Playing in his sixth consecutive Australian Open quarterfinals, Murray stifled Kyrgios with his serve early. He lost just five points on serve in the opening frame and broke the teenager in the sixth game. It was enough to seize the frame and take a one set lead.

The second set was tighter, as Kyrgios held serve through his service games and forced a tie-breaker. In the breaker is when Murray finally broke the Australian, coming to the net and hitting a fantastic lob over Kyrgios head to take the set.

Kyrgios’ inability to get anything on Murray’s serve would prove to be his downfall. Murray converted 91 percent of his first serves into points in the second set.

A break in the sixth game of the third set would give Murray the advantage he needed to serve out the remainder of the match, closing out the Aussie in just over two hours.

“I’m happy. It’s nice to be in the latter stages of a slam again,” said Murray. “I’m happy with that. Obviously we want to do the best possible, but all you can do is prepare as best you can, which I certainly did over the past few weeks and months, and have given myself an opportunity.”

The Scot had 48 winners to 28 unforced errors and never gave Kyrgios an opening to get himself back into the match. He only gave him two break point chances and won 76 percent of his service points.

As for Kyrgios, the 19-year old broke through to his second Grand Slam quarterfinals and became the first Australian in a decade to reach the final eight in Melbourne.

“It was a really good experience. That was my first Aussie Open Grand Slam match playing on Rod Laver, so that was really cool,” said Kyrgios. “But he was way too good for me tonight. There are some things I can take from that match and get better at.”
