World number one Serena Williams captured her 19th career Grand Slam title on Saturday, continuing her dominance of Maria Sharapova in a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory in the Australian Open final.

“I’m so honored to be here and to hold this 19th trophy,” said Serena. “I didn’t think it would happen this fast, to be honest, but it feels really good.”

A rain delay interrupted the opening set for about 13 minutes as both players headed to the locker rooms. Both struggled with their serve upon returning to the court, and a third break point for the 33-year old Serena allowed her to take the opening set in 47 minutes.

The second set was much different than the first. In the opening frame, the two combined for four breaks of serve, whereas in the second set neither budged on their serve. The set featured no breaks and all holds, which eventually resulted in it heading to a tiebreaker.

In the breaker, Serena took a 6-4 advantage but, as she does so often, Sharapova saved another match point, her second of the match. But that was all Sharapova could muster up as Serena would fire an ace on the next point, wrapping up the one hour and 51 minute straight-set victory.

“I have to congratulate Maria, who played a wonderful, wonderful match tonight,” said Serena. “She really pushed me tonight. She played so well and gave us a great final—not only for you guys, but for women’s tennis and all of the sponsors who support our sport and all of us. I’m honored to play you in the final.”

The title is her sixth at the Australian Open and 19th overall, moving her into sole possession of second place on the all-time Grand Slam list in the Open Era. She still trails Steffi Graff, who finished her career with 22.

“I would love to get to 22,” said Serena. “I mean, 19 was very difficult to get to. But I have to get to 20 first, and then I have to get to 21. It will be a very big task.”

Serena has now defeated Sharapova in their last 15 meetings, a remarkable streak when you consider that Sharapova is the second-ranked player in the world. The Russian was extremely gracious in defeat and congratulated Serena on her victory.

“First of all I’ve got to congratulate Serena on creating history and on playing some of her best tennis,” said Sharapova as she addressed the Melbourne crowd. “It’s an honor playing against her. I haven’t beaten her in a really long time, but I love it every time I step on the court to play her because she’s the best, and as a tennis player you want to play the best, so congratulations on such a great achievement.”
