Martina Hingis captured her first Grand Slam title since coming out of retirement in 2013, teaming up with India’s Leander Paes to win the Australian Open Mixed-Doubles Championship 6-4, 6-3 over defending champions Krisina Mladenovic of France & Daniel Nestor of Canada.

“I think we grew with every match—the confidence, the teamwork, the suggestions we had, one or the other. We really trust each other,” said Hingis of her chemistry with Paes. “I think that was the key in every match. The big points, like today, we were up a break in the first, in the second, and then the broke me back. But we stayed there, stayed focus, and just did our job. I think that was the key, that we were always there.”

Some sloppy play from the French-Canadian duo allowed Hingis & Paes to take the opening set in less than a half hour. Serving down 4-5, Nestor double-faulted on a set point to give Hingis & Paes the one set advantage.

In the second set, neither side could really get their respective service games going. There were five breaks of serve total, with Hingis & Paes snatching one more than Mladenovic & Nestor, allowing the Swiss-Indian pair to close out the straight-set win in just over an hour.

“Our understanding of each other is amazing,” said the 41-year-old Paes. “Martina is such a smart tennis player, and she knows exactly what movements I’m going to do (and) I know what movements she’s going to do.”

Paes now has three Australian Open mixed-doubles titles.

In the men’s doubles championship, Italian’s Simone Bolelli & Fabio Fognini knocked off France’s Pierre-Hughes Herbert & Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday to win their first Grand Slam title together.
