The number two and three seeds at the Dubai Duty Free Championships survived potential upsets on Tuesday, as second-seeded Petra Kvitova and third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki needed all three sets to come out victorious in the tournament’s second-round.

Wozniacki was playing in her first match since her loss to Victoria Azarenka at last month’s Australian Open, and came into her match against Samantha Stosur Tuesday hampered by a knee injury.

The Australian Stosur took advantage of it by notching the decisive break in the opening set to take it 6-4. It was then that Wozniacki called for the trainer and had some work done on that injured knee.

Whatever the trainer did worked, as the Dane came out in the second set with much more energy. She broke and held through the first four games of the frame to take a commanding 4-0 second set lead before eventually closing it out 6-1.

Wozniacki continued the aggressive play and raced out to a 5-2 third-set lead and looked to be cruising. Stosur fought back and was able to even the set at 5-5, saving two match points on the way, before Wozniacki rallied to finish her off and advance.

“I thought I was long gone after that first set,” said Wozniacki. “I’m happy to be through and into the next round.”

The Dane has been dealing with illness since she landed in Dubai, but will look to shake that off when she meets 15th-seeded Alize Cornet of France. Cornet ousted Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay 6-2, 6-4.

Second-seeded Petra Kvitova also dropped the opening set in her match and trailed 2-0 in the second set before rallying for the 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Russian Elina Svitolina.

“I’m not sure where I was in the first set. I don’t think I was on the court,” said Kvitova. “But that happens sometimes. I think I was too hectic. I really wanted to play aggressively and I made a lot of mistakes. Very easy balls, I just gave them away for free … I knew it was going to be tough.”

The third-ranked Czech moves on and will take on 13th-seeded Carla Suarez-Navarro of Spain. Suarez-Navarro took down Italy’s Camila Giorgi 6-3, 6-4.

The tournament’s top seed Simona Halep routed wild card Slovak Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 6-0 on Tuesday to advance. Halep broke to go up 3-2 in the opening set and then rattled off the next nine games to blow past Hantuchova and end her six-match winning streak.

The Romanian will meet Tsvetana Pironkova who came back from a set down to beat 16th seeded Peng Shuai 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).

The number four, five and six seeds all also pushed through to the next round on Tuesday. Fourth-seeded Ana Ivanovic beat Sabine Lisicki 6-0, 6-3, fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska fought off Caroline Garcia for a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory and sixth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova rolled 6-3, 6-3 over Kateryna Kozlova.

Ninth-seeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany, who won the Diamond Games tournament on Sunday, bowed out of Dubai early, losing to Isreal’s Zarina Diyas 7-5, 6-3.
