Borna Coric of Croatia pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the young year on Thursday, storming past world number three Andy Murray 6-1, 6-3 to reach the Dubai Duty Free Championships semifinals.

“One of the biggest wins, for sure,” said the 18-year-old Coric. “I was just trying to maintain my level, stay in the rallies as long as I can, which I was doing really well.”

Coric won 89 percent of his first serve points and didn’t even allow Murray a break point opportunity. His return game was stifling as well, breaking Murray four of the eight tries he had.

“He didn’t make many errors,” said Murray. “He played very solid and he moved well. I made way too many mistakes from the beginning of the match right through to the end, early in rallies, rushing points.”

Coric becomes the first teenager to reach the Dubai final four since a 19-year old Rafael Nadal won it all back in 2006.

“I’m still a little bit struggling with the best players when they are playing really good obviously,” added Coric. “I always need to be on 100 percent, and when I’m on 100 percent, mentally [and] also tennis wise, then I think I can play with them.”

He will need to be on top of his game in the next match when he meets second-seeded Roger Federer in the semis. Federer should be fresh for that match as he advanced after France’s Richard Gasquet retired after the first set.

“I think I played well. I served well,” said Federer. “Then again, the test was so short that it’s tough to judge on a 20-minute match. But, you know, I think I was hitting the ball well again, like yesterday. I felt able to play aggressive and do what I was hoping to do, so I was very pleased actually.”

The other semifinal in Dubai will feature top-seeded Novak Djokovic and fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych.

Djokovic needed less than 50 minutes to defeat Marsel Ilhan 6-1, 6-1 on Thursday. The four-time champion hit seven aces and saved all three-break point chances he faced.

The world number one will take on the Berdych in the semis after the Czech edged Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
