Lucie Safarova beat Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-3 to win the Qatar Total Open in Doha. The win is the biggest of the Czech’s career and gives her the first Premier-level championship.

“I felt really good all week here and my performances were better and better, and I just wanted to use the opportunity to really go for it and take the title,” said Safarova. “I think I just really enjoyed it out there tonight, the atmosphere, the crowd—and just really went for every point.”

Safarova took out three seeded players on her way to the final, setting up a matchup between two unseeded players in her and Azarenka.

The Czech sent a message early by breaking in the opening game, and used that to serve out the remainder of the 6-4 set. She built another 3-1 lead in the second set and never looked back, rolling to the 6-4, 6-3 victory.

“I’m really excited and happy about this because it took me quite a few years to get to this point,” said Safarova. “I hope it’s not a finish point and I can still improve. My game improved a lot the last couple of years. I think me and my coach, Rob Steckley, have been doing a great job together. It’s just hard work and also maturing a little bit—I think it’s just everything coming together right now.”

While Azarenka entered the final with a 14-match winning streak in Doha, she was playing in her first final since last January.

“It’s been a long week for me,” said Azarenka. “It’s been awhile since I had that many matches in a row. Sometijmes the body needs to get back into that rhythm. It wasn’t my best today, but I tried my best.”

Safarova climbs to number 11 in the world, while Azarenka moved up 10 spots in the rankings to number 38 in the world.
