Simona Halep dropped the opening set to 12th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro in Wednesday’s quarterfinal, but rallied to win 12 of the next 14 games and move into the BNP Paribas Open semifinals with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory.

The third-seeded Halep dropped the first four games of the match to go down 0-4. Despite rallying back to bring it to four-all, Suarez-Navarro secured a break late in the set and took the opener 7-5.

From there, Halep needed just a little over an hour to win the next two sets 6-1 each. She fired 28 winners in the match and broke the Spaniard’s serve eight times to prevail and reach the final four in Indian Wells.

“She was opening the court pretty well with the angles, and it’s really tough to play and hit the balls from wide in the court, so I knew I had to start playing more aggressively and hit more into the court,” said Halep. “I just tried to relax my body and my mind, fight for every point and play my best. And I’m happy to be in the semifinals again.”

In the semifinals, the Romanian will meet world number one Serena Williams. The American extended her winning streak to 15, while ending the 15-match winning streak of Timea Bacsinszky, beating the Swiss 7-5, 6-3 to set up a matchup with Halep.

Just like in her previous match with Sloane Stephens, Serena fell behind early. She trailed Bacsinszky 1-3 in the opening game, but rallied for the straight set victory. Despite having more unforced errors than her opponent, 31 to 22, she had more than twice as many winners, 22 to 11.

“I’m just happy that I was able to get through that and still be alive in this tournament when I haven’t clearly been the Serena that we all know,” she said following the win. “The only thing is I know I can play a lot better. I really take a lot of solace in that. Even if I don’t win this event, I know I can play a tremendous amount better than what I have been playing.”

Serena leads the all-time series with Halep 4-1.

The other semifinal in Indian Wells will be determined today as two quarterfinal battles will be played. 15th seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta will play 24th seed Sabine Lisicki, while former champion and 18th seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic plays Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko.
