American Sam Querrey beat compatriot Steve Johnson 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 on Wednesday to move into the third-round of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, Texas.

Querrey fired 18 aces to move past his fellow American and good friend Johnson. After a back and forth first two sets, Querrey blitzed Johnson in the decider, winning 12 of 14 points on his serve and converting on all three of his break point chances.

“It’s not fun,” said Querrey of battling against his friend. “It’s kind of uncomfortable almost the whole time. I’m definitely glad I won, but it doesn’t quite feel the same.”

Querrey will meet top-seeded Feliciano Lopez in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard rolled past Australian Sam Groth 6-3, 6-3 to advance.

Lopez converted three of seven break points and won 78 percent of his service points to move past Groth.

“I’m very pleased to be here again,” said Lopez. “I need a few more matches to start moving better and hitting the ball cleaner, but it was very difficult because he was serving huge. I think I did quite good overall.”

The other quarterfinal matchup set up in Houston yesterday will feature third-seeded Kevin Anderson and seventh-seeded Jeremy Chardy.

The South African Anderson had to come back from a set down to oust Argentinean Federico Delbonis 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-3.

He picked up five break points in the final two sets to turn the tables of the match and move on.

“I felt I was moving quite well. There were a few sort of hesitancies as far as where I was on clay, and I think I far exceeded that,” said Anderson. “He was a very tough opponent, so I had my work cut out for me today. Clay is a surface that I’ve always enjoyed, and I’ve progressed a lot. You can still get the serve going here if you hit your spots.”

Chardy beat Japan’s Go Soeda 6-3, 6-3. The Frenchman only surrendered two break point chances and converted on four of his to reach the final eight.
