Defending champion Novak Djokovic opened up his defense of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia title with a three-set win over Nicolas Almagro on Tuesday. Djokovic hung on to defeat Almagro 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3 to reach round three of the event in Rome, Italy.

It looked as if Djokovic would cruise early on, capturing the first set 6-1 and taking a 5-2 advantage in the second-set tiebreaker. But Almagro didn’t go quietly, reeling off five straight points to win the breaker and send the match into a deciding third set.

The world number one Serb would notch the only break point of the third frame, allowing him to serve out the remainder of the set and win the match.

“At the end of the day it’s a win after three weeks with no official match,” said Djokovic, who was playing in his first match since winning the Monte Carlo Masters. “In the important moments today, I did feel a bit uncomfortable. Maybe that’s due to a lack of competitive play in the past couple of weeks. But I won against a quality player, who knows how to play on the big stage. All in all, it was a great test.”

Djokovic moves on and will play the winner of Thomaz Bellucci and 14th seed Roberto Bautista-Agut in the next round.

Djokovic wasn’t the only top player taken to three sets on Tuesday.

Eighth-seeded Swiss Stan Wawrinka had to battle back from a set down to outlast Juan Monaco 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

“For me, it’s never easy when I get into a tournament,” said Wawrinka. “Juan is a tough player to play, especially on clay. I’m happy to get through. The most important thing is to win matches.”

Wawrinka will play the winner of Dominic Thiem and Gilles Simon in the third-round.

U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic’s struggles continued on Tuesday as he was ousted in the first-round. Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez took out the Croat 6-4, 6-3 to advance.

David Ferrer moved past France’s Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the third-round.

Other winners on Tuesday included: 11th seed Feliciano Lopez, 13th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 15th seed Kevin Anderson, Viktor Troicki, Alexandr Dolgopolov and David Goffin.
