American Madison Keys looked to be on her way to a blowout loss in the second round of the Internationaux de Strasbourg on Wednesday, before rallying back for a 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(0) victory over Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Keys lost the break advantage in the first set, allowing Lucic-Baroni to take it 6-4 despite being broke two times herself. In the second set, Lucic-Baroni came out firing, and raced out to a 5-0 advantage.

With her back against the wall and her thoughts possibly on the upcoming French Open, Keys turned things around. She worked her way back to 4-5, and then held serve after a long point to even the frame at 5-5.

Keys would take the set in a tie-breaker, but she wasn’t out of the woods yet. She trailed 4-5 and needed a break point to stay in the match. She conjured up two powerful forehand winners to even the set, and won all the points in the tiebreak to complete the stunning comeback.

“I was definitely thinking that I would be heading to Paris,” said Keys. “Mirjana was playing well and I wasn’t playing great, and I was just really happy that I was able to find it and figure it out. For sure my mental toughness was important. Even at 5-0, I was trying hard and putting in all of my effort. My game was there, it was just a couple of points here or there that hadn’t been going my way. It was a battle to the very, very end, and I’m very relieved for this victory. Hopefully, I can build on it and play better tomorrow.”

Keys will take on France’s Kristina Mladenovic in the quarterfinals. Mladenovic got past American Alison Riske 7-6(4), 6-2 to advance.

Elena Vesnina took out fourth-seed Alize Cornet 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. She will take on French wild card Virginia Razzano. The 251st-ranked Razzano ousted Italy’s Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-3 to reach the final eight.
