Roger Federer captured his eighth Gerry Weber Open championship on Sunday, downing Italian Andreas Seppi 7-6(1), 6-4 in Halle, Germany.

Seppi had his chances in the opening set, including three break points and two set points but was unable to undo Federer. The Swiss capitalized on his first of five set points in the tiebreaker to close out the opening frame.

In the second set, both players held through the first nine games. With a 5-4 advantage, Federer notched the lone break point to close out the straight-set victory.

“I think that I did very well here in the tiebreaks,” said Federer. “I served well which you have to on the grass. I was able to mix it up, so I created a good pattern going into the tiebreak. My opponent wouldn’t quite know where it’s going to go and if he knew where it was going to go it was going to be tough for him to defend. I think I did a really nice job this week on these situations.”

Overall, Federer fired 14 aces and 36 winners to keep Seppi from the title, and played his best tennis in the match’s biggest moments.

“I think one big secret on grass is when to hit which shot and playing the score the right way,” added Federer. “

Federer’s title makes him the third player in the Open Era to win at least eight titles at one tournament. Rafael Nadal has won nine championships at Roland Garros and eight in Monte Carlo, and Guillermo Vilas won eight titles in Buenos Aires.

“Of course it’s a special moment for me, to win here for the eighth time before Wimbledon,” he said. “It doesn’t happen without making an impression.”
