The third day at Wimbledon was a good one for the American women, as both Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Coco Vandeweghe pulled off upsets to reach the third-round.

Mattek-Sands defeated seventh-seed and French Open semifinalist Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-4 to advance.

“Ana’s a really nice person, she’s a champion, so it was a really good win for me,” said Mattek-Sands, who had to go through Wimbledon’s qualifying to make the main draw. “Just beating someone like Ana, who had a great French Open—she made the semifinals—is a Top 10 player. I take every win, put it under my belt and keep going. I’m here to play my game, I play aggressive and that’s what I’m going to do going forward.”

Mattek-Sands saved seven break points and notched three of her own to take command of each set. She sets up a matchup with 30th-seeded Swiss Belinda Bencic, who beat Anna-Lena Friedsam 7-5, 4-6, 6-0.

Vandeweghe dispatched 11th-seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova 7-6(5), 6-4 to advance. She fired 32 winners and converted on two of her 11 break points. Her serve was in form today as she picked up points on 84 percent of her first serves.

She will play 22nd seeded Australian Samantha Stosur next. Stosur ousted Poland’s Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 6-4 earlier in the day.

In an all-American battle, Sloane Stephens beat Lauren Davis 6-4, 6-4.

The other upset of the day came from the racquet of Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic, who downed 19th seeded Italian Sara Errani 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-2.

Former Wimbledon champions Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova all won in straight sets to advance to the third-round.
