Ram Beats Karlovic for Second Newport Title
American Rajeev Ram won his second title at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships on Sunday, downing second-seeded Croat Ivo Karlovic 7-6(5), 5-7, 7-6(2) to snap a three-year American drought at the tournament in Newport, R.I.

“To say that I felt like I’d be the winner at the end of the week…I had no idea,” said the 31-year-old Denver native. “The first win was more elation, this one is more satisfaction just because I did it again.”

Ram found himself with his back against the wall multiple times throughout this tournament. In the first-round, he saved a match point against top-seeded American John Isner before winning in a third-set tiebreak, and then saved two match points in the quarterfinals against fifth-seed Adrian Mannarino.

After taking a one-set lead in the championship, Ram saw Karlovic respond back with seven aces to take the second set. The third-set would head into a tiebreaker, and Ram quickly jumped ahead and gave himself four championship points, putting it away after a Karlovic volley ripped into the net.

Ram shot up 75 spots in the ATP World Tour Rankings with his victory, and now finds himself ranked 86th in the world.

Larsson Wins Collector Swedish Open For First WTA Title
Sweden’s number one player, Johanna Larsson, captured her first career WTA title on Sunday on her home soil, defeating defending champion Mona Barthel 6-3, 7-6(2) to win the Collector Swedish Open in Bastad, Sweden.

Larsson fell down a break early in the first set, but responded with two breaks of her own to take the opening set 6-3. After the second set went to a tiebreak, she raced out to a 5-0 lead in the tiebreaker and put away the fourth-seeded German to win her maiden career title.

“I’m extremely happy,” said Larsson. “I think I played really well today and I tried to concentrate on taking it point by point. Mona is playing very aggressive tennis so I think my spin really paid off.

I’m just really living in the moment right now and I’m happy with this victory today. Hopefully this can pay off later in the season, but right now I am just going to enjoy my first career WTA title.”

Larsson wasn’t done after her singles title though. The Swede became the first player this year to sweep both singles and doubles at a tournament, partnering with Kiki Bertens to beat Tatjana Maria and Olga Savchuk 7-5, 6-4 in the doubles final.

Schmiedlova Upsets Errani for Bucharest Crown
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova upset top-seeded Italian Sara Errani 7-6(3), 6-3 to win the Bucharest Open title on Sunday for the second title of her career.

The Slovak edged Errani in the first set tiebreaker, and then pulled away at 3-3 in the second. She broke at love in the final game to close out Errani and win the straight-set championship.

“I still cannot believe I won, because it was a really tough match and Sara Errani is such an amazing player,” said Schmiedlova, who recorded the first top 20 win of her career. “I knew she’d be playing really well, and I knew it would be tough to focus on each point today because we would have really, really long rallies. After I won the first set I did everything I could to win the second set, because I couldn’t imagine being able to play a third set against her. And I’m really happy I was able to close it out right there.”
