Andy Murray fought his way back from a set down to defeat France’s Gilles Simon 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the quarterfinal victory for Great Britain and put them into the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time since 1981.

Murray picked up all three victories for his country in the 3-1 victory in the best-of-five series. He defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in singles on Friday before teaming up with his brother, Jamie, to win in doubles on Saturday, and then sealed his team’s victory with the win over Simon on Sunday.

“The whole weekend has been fantastic,” said Murray. “The team has done amazing things. We’re punching above our weight here. We’re in the semifinals now of the biggest competition in tennis. I’m just proud to get here and hopefully we can do well against Australia in September.”

The final match between Tsonga and James Ward was not played.

Great Britain will now take on Australia, who came back from 0-2 down to beat Kazakhstan 3-2.

After losing the opening two singles matches, Australia’s comeback began with a 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-2 win by Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth over Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov in the doubles match on Saturday.

Groth then defeated Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(6) to even the series up at 2-2, forcing the best-of-five series into a deciding fifth match.

Hewitt beat Nedovyesov 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-3 on Sunday to complete Australia’s comeback and put them into a semifinal contest against Great Britain.

“We didn’t have everything go our way this weekend, we had to rally,” said Hewitt. “We were playing for the boys on the side of the court and the nation as well.”

The other semifinal will pit Argentina against Belgium.

Argentina defeated Serbia 4-1 while Belgium rolled over Canada 5-0.
