Thirty-three-year-old American and former top 10 player Mardy Fish announced via Twitter on Wednesday that he will retire after next month’s U.S. Open.

“My schedule this summer will be Atlanta, Cincinnati and I will finish my career at the U.S. Open … #lastride”, Fish tweeted out, indicating that he will play in two tournaments of the Emirates Airline U.S. Open Series prior to wrapping up his career up at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Despite having only played one competitive match since 2013, the USTA said that Fish will be able to use a protected ranking to gain entry into the U.S. Open.

Fish reached a career-high ranking of number seven in the world back in 2011. Anxiety problems limited his time on the court and he played just 10 matches in 2013, and then missed more than a year and a half before he played at Indian Wells this past March.

Last month, Fish said that returning to the U.S. Open was important to him.

“Obviously, it’s no secret, I’d love to get back to the U.S. Open, where it all sort of came crashing down for me in 2012, and sort of conquer that place,” said Fish. “And by ‘conquer,’ I mean just get back out on the court there. I have a lot of demons from that place.”
