The start of Serena Williams’ quest for a Calendar Grand Slam took just 30 minutes Monday night, as an ankle injury got the better of Russian Vitalia Diatchenko, forcing the 86th-ranked player in the world to retire with the match 6-0, 2-0.

Serena, a six-time U.S. Open champion, is just six wins away from history as she looks to tie Steffi Graf’s Open Era record of 22 Grand Slam titles.

“I can feel the love and support on this journey and milestone,” said Serena post-match, extending her winning streak in Flushing Meadows to 22 consecutive matches. “I’m here, I’m ready for whatever happens, here where it all began in 1999.”

Diatchenko, hampered by a left ankle injury, served flat-footed and watched Serena storm off to a 6-0 win in the first set in just 21 minutes.

Up next for Serena is Kiki Bertens of The Netherlands, a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 winner Monday over Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Also a winner Monday was one of the women who last sent Serena to defeat, 18-year-old Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, who dominated Bulgarian Sesil Karatantcheva, 6-1, 6-2. Bencic is looking to make a solid run at the Open, after cutting down the likes of Serena, Eugenie Bouchard, Caroline Wozniacki, Sabine Lisicki, Ana Ivanovic and Simona Halep en route to the title in Toronto. Up next for Bencic is Japan's Misaki Doi, a 6-3, 6-3 winner on Monday over Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova.

Joining the American brigade of women in advancing Monday is Coco Vandeweghe, a winner over fellow countrywoman Sloan Stephens, 6-4, 6-2. Vandeweghe will next face wild card entry Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
