Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga continued his stellar play in Flushing on Friday, dispatching Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the Round of 16.

Through the first seven games, this match was on serve, but that was when Stakhovsky made the first big mistake. He hit a volley into the net on break point, and after Tsonga consolidated it with a hold, the 19th-seeded Frenchman was up a set.

Despite many break chances in the second set, this set stayed on serve until 5-5. Another missed volley followed by a double-fault gave Tsonga the break, and after he once again consolidated it with a hold, Tsonga won that set and held a commanding two sets to love lead.

With momentum on his side, Tsonga rolled in the third set 6-2, winning his ninth consecutive set at the U.S. Open this week.

Tsonga will play his French compatriot Benoit Paire in the next round. Paire scored the upset Friday afternoon, defeating the 26th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-1.

Tsonga is 2-0 all-time against his fellow Frenchman, but the two haven’t faced off since 2012.
