The 27th-seeded Jeremy Chardy became the third Frenchman into the Round of 16 at the 2015 U.S. Open, upsetting seventh-seed David Ferrer 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 on Friday.

He joins fellow countrymen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Benoit Paire in the fourth round.

Chardy worked his way back from two mini-breaks to win the first set tie-breaker, but was broken late in the second set to bring the match even after two sets.

But Chardy got the break in the third set at 2-2 and went on to serve out the set. And this time, Chardy kept momentum on his side, breaking Ferrer in all four of his service games to win the match and reach the first U.S. Open fourth round in his career.

Chardy will take on last year’s champion, the ninth-seed Marin Cilic, for a spot in the quarterfinals. Cilic hung on to beat Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin in five sets earlier in the day. Chardy and Cilic have met twice before, each scoring a victory, with the most recent a Cilic win in the Round of 16 at last year’s Wimbledon.
