Serena Williams moved one step closer to her date with history on Tuesday night, defeating older sister and 23rd seed Venus Williams 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to reach the U.S. Open semifinals.

Coming into this match, the world number one knew it would not be easy. Venus had beaten her 11 times previously and Serena herself said Venus was the toughest player she had ever played against. And Venus presented a major challenge on Tuesday.

Venus came out firing and hitting the ball hard, but it was Serena who was able to secure the first break for a 3-2 lead. One more break allowed her to take the opening set 6-2.

In that first set, Serena hit 15 winners to just two unforced errors and was unflappable. But that script changed a bit in the second, as Venus became the aggressor and started to put the pressure on Serena. A few errors allowed Venus to secure a break for a 3-1 lead, and after consolidating it with a hold, Venus broke one more time to take command of the set.

Serena had 11 errors in that second set and Venus took full advantage. She took the second set 6-1 and sent this much-anticipated match into a deciding third set.

But as she does so often, Serena turned up her level in the final set. After holding to start it, she broke Venus and consolidated it with a hold to build a 3-0 lead, quickly snatching back the momentum that Venus had created.

“Yea, she has of course a wonderful mental game, but she also has ability to come up with a great shot when she needs it,” said Venus. “That’s just been the hallmark of her game.”

From there, she just had to hold serve, and she did, going on to win the three-setter in one hour and 38 minutes.

Serena is now two matches away from becoming the first player to win the Calendar Grand Slam since Steffi Graff in 1988. Up next for her will be Italian Roberta Vinci. Serena is 4-0 all-time against Vinci.
