After the two matches on Friday, the United States and Uzbekistan are all tied up at 1-1 in the Davis Cup World Group Playoff match.

Steve Johnson opened up the series for the U.S., but lost a tough five-set contest to Denis Istomin 1-6, 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 5-7, putting the Americans in an early hole.

But Jack Sock answered the call in the second match. Making his Davis Cup debut, he notched a routine straight-set win over Farrukh Dustov, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2.

“It was a tricky day with our two players making their debuts in singles and Jack playing impressively and Steve fighting exceptionally hard,” U.S. Captain Jim Courier said.

Sock’s win avoided the 0-2 hole for the United States, with the final three matches to be played this weekend.

“I knew I had to kind of buckle down and try and get us a win,” said Sock. “I was able to do it, thankfully in three sets—get in and get out.”

The doubles match on Saturday will see Johnson pair up with Sam Querrey to take on Istomin & Dustov.

“Sam and I have played well the last couple of weeks,” said Johnson. “We know how we are going to play. We know how we play best. It’s going to be fun to go out there with Sam and go out there and compete. That’s why you compete in these events and try to get a win for your country.”
