Playing in her first match since Wimbledon, Russia’s Maria Sharapova was forced to retire in the third set against Barbora Strycova in the second-round of the Wuhan Open with a wrist injury, giving Strycova the 6-7 (1), 7-6(4), 1-2 victory.

Sharapova looked to be on her way to a victory on Monday, taking the first set in a tiebreaker and going up a break in the second set. But her play dropped from there as Sharapova was clearly bothered by an injury.

She gave the break back to Strycova, and the Czech would go on to take the second set in a tiebreaker. Sharapova would go up 2-1 in the third set, but received treatment during the changeover, and was unable to continue play after that, retiring with the third set lead.

Strycova will go on to play the winner of Caroline Garcia and Coco Vandeweghe in the third round.
