The second-seeded Tomas Berdych was ousted from the China Open in the first round on Wednesday, as Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas rolled Berdych 6-4, 6-4 to reach the Round of 16 in Beijing.

Berdych failed to capitalize on any of his six break point chances, while Cuevas was able to secure one in each set to put together the straight-set victory. Cuevas took advantage of 32 unforced errors by Berdych.

“I made one tournament title, the other one didn't go my way,” said Berdych. “I’m just going to try to do well in the third one, my last one. It's always a difficult part of the year. We have to travel a lot. The conditions are always very different, very difficult, week by week here in China. It's not easy to adjust … It's the same for all of us just ahead of the last and big tournament.”

The 37th-ranked Cuevas moves on to play the big-serving Ivo Karlovic. The Croat knocked out Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 7-6(1) on Wednesday.

Karlovic fired 19 aces and faced only two break points.

American Jack Sock moved into the Beijing quarterfinals, downing Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-3, 6-1 to book his spot in the final eight.

Sock didn’t face a break point all match and converted on four his seven break point chances to cruise. He will play the winner of Canadian and doubles partner Vasek Pospisil and third-seed Rafael Nadal.

Chinese Taipei wild card Yen-Hsun Lu earned a spot in the quarterfinals, downing Serbian Viktor Troicki 6-4, 7-5. He will next play fourth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer, who made his way into the quarterfinals with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over the Czech Republic’s Lukas Rosol.
