The Czech Republic battled back to defeat Russia 3-2 over the weekend, winning the nation’s second consecutive Fed Cup title and ninth overall.

“We are feeling unbelievable. We can’t describe it. I’m speechless,” said Barbora Strycova. “This atmosphere, playing here at home with such a crowd, it’s just unbelievable.”

The two nations entered Sunday tied at 1-1, after Russian Maria Sharapova evened things up with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Czech Karolina Pliskova in the second singles match on Saturday.

And the Russians would take the early lead on Sunday thanks to Sharapova, who came back from a set down to beat Petra Kvitova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the opening singles match to move the Russians within one victory of upending the Czechs for the championship.

But Pliskova recovered from her defeat on Saturday to square things up, downing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-4 to force a deciding rubber doubles match.

With the matchup all even at 2-2, both teams made some adjustments to their doubles teams. The Czech’s replaced Lucie Safarova with Karolina Pliskova to play with Barbora Strycova, and the Russians replaced Ekaterina Makarova with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to play with Elena Vesnina.

Makarova and Pavlyuchenkova got off to a good start taking the opening set 6-4, but the Czech duo rallied to win in 12 of the final 17 games to win the rubber match 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and earn a fourth Fed Cup title in five years for the Czechs.

“It’s the first experience for me in a Fed Cup final, so I’m really happy how we made it,” said Pliskova. “We both played really well in the last match and I’m so happy we have the trophy right now. It’s definitely one of the biggest wins of my career. It’s been an unbelievable week in Prague.”
