World number three Roger Federer underwent successful knee surgery, forcing him to miss tournaments in Rotterdam and Dubai this month, according to a statement posted on his official website Wednesday.

“Roger Federer underwent successful arthroscopic knee surgery today in Switzerland to repair a torn meniscus,” the statement reads. “The injury happened the day after the semifinal match in Australia. As a result, Federer has withdrawn from the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam (Feb 8-21) and the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in Dubai (Feb 22-27).”

The statement did not specify how the injury was sustained, but Federer wanted to assure his fans he would be ready to play again soon. His next scheduled tournament, according to his website, is the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells in early March.

“I am so disappointed to have to miss Rotterdam and Dubai as they are two of my favorite tournaments on the ATP World Tour,” said Federer in the statement. “While this is an unfortunate setback, I feel grateful that up until now I have remained mostly healthy throughout my career. My doctors have ensured me that the surgery was a success and with proper rehabilitation, I will be able to return to the Tour soon.”

Federer has been injury-free for the bulk of his career, which is why he is able to still play at such a high level at 34-years old.

The Swiss is the defending champion in Dubai, having defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets in last year’s final.

Former Wimbledon Champion Richard Krajicek, who is now the Rotterdam tournament organizer, said they hope to have Federer back  next year.

“Obviously, receiving this information yesterday evening is a major setback for us, as it is for the fans looking forward to his presence,” the 1996 Wimbledon champ from the Netherlands said. “We hope to have Roger back next year.”
