NY’s Chirico Advances To Madrid Open Quarterfinals

May 4, 2016 | By New York Tennis Magazine Staff

Louisa Chirico, a former star in the USTA Eastern section, made her way into the Mutua Madrid Open quarterfinals on Wednesday without having to take the court as her opponent, Victoria Azarenka, pulled out of the tournament with a back injury.

Azarenka, who has been off to a phenomenal start in 2016, said she tweaked her back in her opening round Madrid match against Laura Robson and the pain continued in her second-round contest against Alize Cornet.

“I don’t feel that I’m able to compete today,” Azarenka said.

The win puts Chirico, who hails from Harrison, N.Y., into the Madrid quarterfinals. She will take on Australia’s Daria Gavrilova, who upset Petra Kvitova in her third round match.

With Azarenka’s withdrawal and Kvitova’s upset, the top five seeds are out in Madrid.
