Nadal Withdraws From French Open With Wrist Injury

Nine-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal announced on Friday that he has withdrawn from this year’s tournament with a wrist injury.

Nadal called a press conference on Friday to announce his decision.

“I have to retire from the tournament because I have a problem in my wrist that I have [had] since a couple of weeks,” Nadal said.

It is a tough break for Nadal, who has been playing outstanding tennis in recent weeks. He dropped just nine games total in his first two matches at Roland Garros, but played with an anesthesia injection in his match yesterday.

Nadal said the wrist felt worse last night and this morning. He said nothing is broken, but that he would run the risk of doing so if he continued playing.

“I will work hard to be fit for Wimbledon,” he said. “I need a couple of weeks. At the moment, it’s day by day.”

Nadal called this morning: “One of the toughest press conferences in my career.”

Marcel Granollers now receives a walkover into the fourth round, and will play the winner of Dominic Thiem and
