Azarenka Withdraws From Wimbledon

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka withdrew from Wimbledon on Thursday due to a knee injury that she suffered back in the French Open first round.

Azarenka trailed Karin Knapp 0-4 in the third set of her Roland Garros opener before retiring with the knee injury and she hasn’t played since.

Azarenka was scheduled to be seeded sixth for the Wimbledon Championships.

As a result of her withdrawal, “five-time champion Venus Williams moves from No. 9 seed to No. 8, Britain’s Johanna Konta is up one to No. 16 while German Andrea Petkovic also benefits as she becomes the No. 32 seed,” according to the Wimbledon website.

The recent knee injury for Azarenka comes on the heels of an incredibly successful first few months of 2016 for the Belarusian, who captured the Brisbane title before winning the Indian Wells-Miami sunshine double earlier this year and looked to have regained the form that saw her win back-to-back Australian Opens and reach the top ranking in the world.
