Serena Williams got off to a somewhat slow start in her Wimbledon opener on Tuesday falling behind 15-40 in her opening service game. But that wouldn’t bother her, as the defending champion and world number one steamrolled past Swiss qualifier Amra Sadikovic 6-2, 6-4 to book her spot in the second round.

“It was a solid start in the right direction,” said Serena. “I felt I was where I needed to be. I needed to be pumped for the match. I needed to be intense. I needed to show a lot and feel a lot on the court. That’s typically how I play.”

Serena didn’t play her best tennis, but still had a positive ratio of winners to unforced errors and rose to the occasion in the big points, breaking twice in each set to routinely move past Sadikovic.

In the second round Serena will take on fellow American Christina McHale, who moved past Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova 7-5, 6-2 in her first round contest on Tuesday.

Svetlana Kuznetsova powered past former world number one Caroline Wozniacki 7-5, 6-4 to book her spot in the second round.

“I think at this point I can’t expect an easy draw,” a disappointed Wozniacki told the press afterwards. “You know, it is what it is. She played well. She played aggressively and stepped up when she had to. She did what she had to do today.

I thought I played some really good tennis in Eastbourne, obviously was hoping I could step up from there and do more damage today. But it wasn’t enough.”

Kuznetsova was by far the aggressor in this match, hitting 23 winners to 16 unforced errors while Wozniacki hit just 10 winners and had nine unforced errors.

Up next for Kuznetsova is Great Britain’s Tara Moore, who beat Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday.

While the rain washed out much of Tuesday’s action, other winners included Dominika Cibulkova, Coco Vandeweghe, Caroline Garcia and Roberta Vinci.
