Serena, Venus Survive Wimbledon Upset Bids

July 1, 2016 | By New York Tennis Magazine Staff

It was an eventful Friday at the All England Club for Serena and Venus Williams, who had to overcome rain delays and their opponents to advance at Wimbledon.

Venus took on 29th seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina, and outlasted her 7-5, 4-6, 10-8. Venus was down a break and 3-4 in the third set before getting the break back. She held a match point at 5-4 in the third set, but that’s when the rain came pouring down to delay the match.

Kasatkina would come back to hold in that game, and both players would hold serve until 9-8, when Venus broke one more time to close things out and move on.

“This has got to be something out of a movie,” said Venus after the marathon match. “She’s such a great competitor and it wasn’t easy to play out there against someone who was so inspired.”

Venus will take on Carla Suarez-Navarro of Spain next.

Serena battled with fellow American Christina McHale in a match that became much more thrilling than anyone expected. McHale got things going right away with a break of serve in the opening game. Serena would respond to get the break back and the set headed into a tiebreaker, which McHale would win to take the one set advantage.

The world number one turned up her level in the second set, breaking twice and winning 76 percent of her first serves to cruise to the 6-2 set victory.

In the third, McHale once again broke early and took a 2-0 lead, only to see Serena respond immediately to even things at 2-2. The set would remain on serve until 4-4, when McHale began to struggle with her first serve, and Serena took full advantage to pounce on her second serves and take the 5-4 lead.

Serena then dialed up some of her best serves, firing three straight aces to seal the 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-4 victory.

“I know mentally no one can break me,” said Serena afterwards. “I knew being a break down in the third I would have to put my mind in it. That’s what I did.”

Serena takes on Annika Beck in the third round.
