Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber was the first woman to advance to the Wimbledon semifinals on Tuesday, downing fifth-seed Simona Halep 7-5, 7-6(2).

“I think we are both really good returners,” Kerber said of the two similar-styles of play. “It’s always tough to play against Simona. I won the last point and that’s what counts. I had a great year so far with the Australian Open title and right now I’m feeling so good.

I think I’m playing my best tennis right now.”

Kerber certainly came to play on Tuesday, immediately breaking Halep for the early 2-0 lead and dropping just one point through the first two games. Halep would get the break back to trim things to 1-2, only to see Kerber take back the break advantage for 3-1.

As Kerber said, both players are excellent returners, and that was on display as neither player was able to do much on their own serve. In the first set along, Halep broke four times while Kerber broke five times, they key one coming at 6-5, when Halep double-faulted on set point to hand Kerber the opener.

In the second set, the two would exchange breaks in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth games, and the set would head into a tiebreaker.

Halep would win the first point in the tiebreaker, but the rest belonged to Kerber. The German won the next five points to take control, eventually closing it out 7-2 for the straight set victory.

In the semifinals, Kerber will take on American Venus Williams, who downed Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova 7-6(5), 6-2 to reach her first Wimbledon semifinal since she was a finalist back in 2009.

Venus fired 15 winners and took advantage of 33 unforced errors from Shvedova. After taking the first set in a tiebreaker, Venus broke Shvedova in the opening game of the second set to take control, breaking two more times in the set to roll to the straight set victory.

On the men’s side on Tuesday, Czech Tomas Berdych and compatriot Jiri Vesely finished their marathon match from Monday as the 10th seeded Berdych won the final set for the 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(8), 6-7(1), 6-3 victory and book his spot in the quarterfinals.
