The draw for the Rogers Cup in Toronto took a major hit on Tuesday, as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both announced they were withdrawing from the tournament.

The two announcements come just a day after Wimbledon champion and last year’s Rogers Cup champion Andy Murray said he would not play Toronto this year.

“I have made the tough decision to withdraw from Rogers Cup. Toronto is one of my favorite events on the calendar and I am disappointed that I won’t be able to compete in front of the great tennis fans in Canada,” Federer said in a statement. “Looking ahead, it is best for me that I take more time after Wimbledon. I look forward to coming back to Canada next year and I wish Karl Hale and everyone at Tennis Canada a very successful tournament.”

Rafael Nadal, who hasn’t played since pulling out of the French Open’s early rounds with a wrist injury, released a similar statement announcing his absence.

“I am disappointed to announce I won’t be able to come to Toronto to play this year. I only started practicing a week ago after my wrist injury and I am not ready to play such an important event,” Nadal’s statement read. “I am very much looking forward to playing in Toronto in a couple of years since I have always been treated great in that tournament and have a lot of great Canadian fans.”

With three of the top four players in the world out, the draw has become even more favorable to world number one Novak Djokovic.

The withdrawals allow Canada’s Vasek Pospisil to receive direct entry into the main draw as opposed to using the wild card position he was previously granted.

The Rogers Cup qualifying gets underway this weekend.

On the women’s side, defending champion Belinda Bencic announced she will be out of the Rogers Cup as well, citing the same left wrist injury that forced her out of the Wimbledon second round earlier this month.

“I am very sad to have to withdraw from the Rogers Cup,” Bencic said in a statement. “I was looking forward to coming to Montreal and defending my Rogers Cup title but unfortunately my wrist has not completely healed. I will miss my Canadian fans and I am looking forward to getting back on the court soon.”
